Jet observables without jet algorithms

چکیده
We introduce a new class of event shapes to characterize the jet-like structure of an event. Like traditional event shapes, our observables are infrared/collinear safe and involve a sum over all hadrons in an event, but like a jet clustering algorithm, they incorporate a jet radius parameter and a transverse momentum cut. Three of the ubiquitous jet-based observables — jet multiplicity, summed scalar transverse momentum, and missing transverse momentum — have event shape counterparts that are closely correlated with their jet-based cousins. Due to their “local” computational structure, these jet-like event shapes could potentially be used for trigger-level event selection at the LHC. Intriguingly, the jet multiplicity event shape typically takes on non-integer values, highlighting the inherent ambiguity in defining jets. By inverting jet multiplicity, we show how to characterize the transverse momentum of the n-th hardest jet without actually finding the constituents of that jet. Since many physics applications do require knowledge about the jet constituents, we also build a hybrid event shape that incorporates (local) jet clustering information. As a straightforward application of our general technique, we derive an event-shape version of jet trimming, allowing event-wide jet grooming without explicit jet identification. Finally, we briefly mention possible applications of our method for jet substructure studies.

Non-global logarithms and jet algorithms in high-pT jet shapes
We consider jet-shape observables of the type proposed recently [1, 2] where the shapes of one or more high-pT jets, produced in a multi-jet event with definite jet multiplicity, may be measured leaving other jets in the event unmeasured. We point out the structure of the full next-to–leading logarithmic resummation specifically including resummation of non-global logarithms in the leading-Nc l...

This study concerns numerical simulation, modeling and optimization of aerodynamic stall control using a synthetic jet actuator. Thenumerical simulation was carried out by a large-eddy simulation that employs a RNG-based model as the subgrid-scale model. The flow around a NACA0015 airfoil, including a synthetic jet located at 10 % of the chord, is studied under Reynolds number Re = 12.7 × 106 a...
متن کاملFactorization for groomed jet substructure beyond the next-to- leading logarithm
Jet grooming algorithms are widely used in experimental analyses at hadron colliders to remove contaminating radiation from within jets. While the algorithms perform a great service to the experiments, their intricate algorithmic structure and multiple parameters has frustrated precision theoretic understanding. In this paper, we demonstrate that one particular groomer called soft drop actually...
متن کاملQuark mass effects in QCD jets ∗
We present the calculation of the decay width of the Z-boson into three jets including complete quark mass effects to second order in the strong coupling constant. The study is done for different jet clustering algorithms such as EM, JADE, E and DURHAM. Because three-jet observables are very sensitive to the quark mass we consider the possibility of extracting the bottom quark mass from LEP dat...
متن کاملAn Efficient Implementation of the Optimal Jet Definition
Jet finding algorithms are a central data-processing tool in high-energy physics. However, the definition of jets suffered from variously misinterpreted ambiguities, which resulted in several existing jet finding schemes (cone, recombination, ...), each in several variations (for a review see e.g. [1]). This resulted in many practical difficulties since each experiment tends to use its own jet ...
